The Legendary Fred Bear

If you're a hunter and you don't know who the legendary hunter Fred Bear is. I suggest you do a search for him on the internet immediately or at least finish reading this article. All hunters should learn about Fred Bear before even going on their first hunt. And all hunters safety courses should teach all the new hunters who Fred Bear was and what he did for hunting.

Fred was born in 1902 in the town of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. Although being a hunter for most of his life he didn't actually start bow hunting until he was 29 years old. He was a rifle hunter up until the age of 29. The day Fred Bear picked up a bow a legend was born.

He was able to travel the world killing a wide range of animals with just his bow. In fact he held 5 world record kills with a bow. One of the greatest things Fred did for the sport of hunting was that he started filming his hunts. This brought bow hunting and hunting itself in the mainstream. He also founded Bear Archery which used to be the biggest bow manufacture in the world. It still exists to this day. There was also a museum created especially for him that also still exists to this day and resides in Bass Pro Shops. He was also the president of the first and oldest archery club in Michigan. He of course was also entered into the bow hunting hall of fame. It's safe to say that he was the Godfather of modern day bow hunting.

Fred was great friends with the legendary hunter, rocker and hunting activist Ted Nugent. They were great friends and used to hunt together all over the world. Ted cites having learned more from Fred about hunting than anyone else. Ted also wrote the great song rightly titled "Fred Bear."

He was a great man, watching his interviews you can see why everyone who met him immediately liked him. Watching Ted Nugent talk about him is the only time that you'll ever see Uncle Ted come close to tearing up.

He passed away on April, 27 1988 in Gainesville, Florida at the age of 86.

Thanks for everything that you did for us Fred bear.

Here's a great quote from him: "I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target, but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, with the sure knowledge that nature's ways of fangs and claw or exposure and starvation are a far crueler fate than I can bestow." ~ Fred Bear

We owe a lot to him as sportsmen. Hunting with him would be one experience that you'd probably never forget.

Be safe and good hunting my friends.
